DIY Guide

Choosing the right drill bit: wood, metal or masonry

The wrong bit wears fast, burns material or skates. A quick home DIY chooser.

Wood

Sharp wood bits (twist or flat). Mark the centre for accuracy.

Metal

HSS bits, lower RPM, a drop of cutting oil if needed. Let the bit cut — don’t force it.

Masonry / brick / concrete

Carbide-tipped masonry bits, hammer mode when required. Extract dust to reduce wear.

Diameter: slightly smaller than the plug/screw spec unless the maker says otherwise.

Bits and drills: Tools and Hardware.
