Masking before painting: clean sharp lines

Clean edges make the finish look professional. Good masking tape and a calm sequence almost always get you there.

What you need

  • Painter’s masking tape (blue/yellow for interiors)
  • Roller or brush
  • Sharp knife or scissors
  • Dry cloth to wipe dust

Steps

  1. Clean the edge — dust and grease stop tape sticking.
  2. Apply short lengths and press firmly, especially the bottom edge.
  3. Paint from the tape outwards so paint is not forced underneath.
  4. Peel tape while paint is still slightly tacky — fully dry paint tears more easily.
Shop tip: pull tape slowly at about 45° to reduce ragged edges.
